Magazine & News Website Development
Publishing sites have a different problem from business sites: volume. Hundreds of articles, several editors, ads that must load without wrecking page speed, and traffic that spikes when a story lands.
We've already built this: MaxMag
A high-traffic digital magazine running on a custom CMS with dynamic section layouts and ad management — built so editors control the front page without a developer.
Problems we hear before the rebuild
- A WordPress install that slows to a crawl every time a story goes viral
- Plugin stacks that break on every update and need constant patching
- Ad scripts destroying Core Web Vitals and losing mobile readers
- Editors unable to rearrange the homepage without help
- No structured data, so stories never reach Google News or Top Stories
What's included
Editor-controlled layouts
Drag sections and features into place on the homepage and section fronts — editorial judgment shouldn't need a deploy.
Roles and workflow
Writer, editor and admin permissions with drafts, scheduled publishing and revision history.
Traffic-spike architecture
Statically generated articles revalidated on publish and served from a CDN, so a viral story costs bandwidth, not uptime.
Ads without the damage
Ad slots with reserved space and lazy loading below the fold, so revenue doesn't come out of your layout-shift score.
News-ready structured data
NewsArticle markup, author profiles, sitemaps and RSS — the technical prerequisites for Top Stories and Google News.
Newsletter capture
Inline and exit capture wired to your email platform, because owning the list beats renting the algorithm.
Why publishers outgrow WordPress
WordPress is a fine way to start a publication and a common way to get stuck. The pattern is familiar: fifteen plugins, a caching layer fighting an ad script, a theme nobody dares update, and a hosting bill that climbs every time traffic does.
A custom build inverts that. Articles are statically generated and served from a CDN, so reads are nearly free and a traffic spike is a non-event. The CMS holds only what your editors actually use, which means far less to break and nothing to patch on a Friday night.
Ads and page speed can coexist
Ad revenue usually arrives as third-party JavaScript, which is also the fastest way to ruin Core Web Vitals — and mobile readers leave slow pages, which costs you the impressions you were chasing.
The fix is discipline: reserve the exact dimensions of every ad slot so nothing shifts when it fills, lazy-load everything below the fold, and keep the above-the-fold ad count low. You keep the revenue and the readers.
Getting into Top Stories
Top Stories and Google News placement depend on technical eligibility as much as journalism: correct NewsArticle structured data, real author pages with credentials, accurate publish and update timestamps, a clean news sitemap, and fast mobile pages.
We build all of that in from the start. It's far cheaper than retrofitting a publishing site that was never marked up correctly.
Questions we get asked
How much does a magazine or news website cost?
Typically $3,000 to $9,000 for a custom publishing platform with a CMS, section fronts, author pages and ad slots. The main cost drivers are layout flexibility for editors and how many content types you need beyond the standard article.
Can you migrate our existing WordPress content?
Yes. We migrate posts, images, authors, categories and — importantly — preserve your URL structure or set up redirects for every changed URL. Migrations lose rankings when old URLs 404; that's the part we're careful about.
Will our editors need training?
Minimal. The CMS is built around how your newsroom actually works, and we record short walkthroughs for each role. If a task needs a manual, the interface is wrong.
Can it handle a sudden traffic spike?
Yes. Articles are pre-rendered and served from a CDN edge, so ten times the traffic means ten times the cached responses rather than ten times the database load. This is the main architectural reason publishers move off traditional stacks.
Do you handle Google AdSense or direct ad sales?
Both. AdSense or an ad network drops into managed slots, and direct-sold campaigns can be scheduled per slot with date ranges and impression counts.
